Ray was a polished performer graced with a tuneful voice and a strong sense of comic timing. He performed in 20 productions between 1952 and 1976 taking principal parts such as Strephon, Pirate King, Dr Daly, Giuseppe, Captain Corcoran, Grosvenor and Florian. Ray was keen not to perform beyond his ‘sell by date’ and it was felt that he retired from the stage far too early.
